Was just about to purchase a car from private party, when I noticed something odd. On the back of title where I was suppose to sign, the buyer section was already filled out to another entity (looked like a used car dealer). He told me this is not a problem and is quite common, and that a one page reassignment form is all that is needed to register the car at DMV. What's odd is that he told me that he was not a dealer, and it was his personal car, but a quick search on reassignment process shows that only licensed dealers can do this? Maybe he's a broker trying to sell for a dealer? So is this guys story legit or am I looking to get screwed over? Any info would be great, esp. NY DMV specific. Any steps I should take before handing him the money? Thanks.
